Memorial Day trip to SGI

Well I headed down to St George Island, FL for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. This trip I got to go up into the finished lighthouse. Sometime in 2005 the lighthouse, which used to be located on Little St George Island, collapsed. Not long after an effort began to salvage the remains, with a plan to rebuild the lighthouse on the main island so all could enjoy. Little St George is only accessible by boat, so a very small percentage of people that had visited the main island had ever seen it in person. Well since Dennis,a close friend of me and my father, was one of the organizers of the group, and dad not having much free time to help salvage the remains from Little St George, or to help chip off mortar from the recovered bricks, he purchase a tool that they needed.

So after having gotten regular updates about the lighthouse progress, from the salvage to the work chipping the brick, etc I was finally able to check out the completed lighthouse. I also happened to see Dennis while I was there and got a peek inside the Keeper's House. The outside was compete but inside was pretty much just framed, but they did have the AC hooked up and working, it was nice and cool inside.

For more info on the lighthouse, here is the link to the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_St._George_Light
and here is a link to the St George Lighthouse Association

Anyway here are a few photos

The SGI Lighthouse

The view north from the lighthouse. You can see the bridge across Apalachicola Bay in the distance.

The view west from the lighthouse.

The view east from the lighthouse.

I didn't take a shot from the view to the south, mainly because all you could see was some beach and the ocean, not to interesting.

Sunset one evening

Another day another beautiful sunset

St George Island, FL July 4th

Was on St. George Island, FL for the July 4th weekend. The weather was nice but hot.

A close view of our neighbors dock from our house.

A collection of old cars and trucks in a field, not on the island but close.

A view of the sunset from below "The Oar House" at ground level.

The sunrise along the Apalachicola Bay.

Just before the sunrise, from the bridge to St George Island. Part of the old bridge that is now a fishing pier is seen on the lower left.

Trip to St George Island over New Years

I got to make another trip to St George Island, FL over the holidays. I always enjoy the trip and get to see and catch up with a large number of friends on SGI. Here are a few photos from this visit.
All that is left of trees that have been conquered by the sea.

A peacock with a good view

A few wild peacocks

An old sign

The window of the front of the building now offers a look to the water, due to the back being washed away after a flooding of the bay from a hurricane.

A tree along the water line at low tide

Another low tide shot on the bay

A very droopy eyed dog

"Spare Time" between "Mary Beckett" and "Miss Sharon".
Sunken but still tied up

Evidence that Franklin County has the worst school system in the state, the town Apalachicola is spelled wrong on the back of this boat.
